Slasher
Following our audience research, our group settled on the sub genre of Slasher/Cannibal horror. These sub genres normally utilize a mentally ill killer who kills off the other actors one by one in a disturbing way. In all slasher films, the killer uses weapons such as knives this is because of the proximity need to use weapon creates fear for the audience, however Cannibal films often use the same antagonist profile but no weapons, instead relying on teeth and nails. Slashers also get their name by the weapon used as killers in this sub genre always use weapons such as knives or axes. A good example of a slasher film is Nightmare on Elm Street. In this the killer was a paedophile and a rapist and he was burnt to death by the victims of the parents. He then chose to haunt the children and kill them during their dreams. His weapon of choice is a glove with a blade on the end of each finger which leaves a unique and gory wound so you know they were killed by the killer. This is one of the most successful and popular slasher movies ever and it is rated in the top 3 best slashers of all time. Similarly, in The Silence of the Lambs, Hannibal Lecter is known for his muzzle, which has become a brand icon for the film series

Teen- horrors will include teenage problems and issues such as school related issues or a typical teenagers social life. Examples of Teen- horror includes: Scream, Final Destination and Friday the 13th.

Scream's opening scene consists of again a linear style where it is a story up until the young, blonde girl gets killed. It shows a nice, big house in America and the young girl all alone inside the huge house. The stereotype of a young blonde girl is that she isn't smart, she is innocent and not very intelligent defensively so therefore they are easy targets. This stereotype is also used in A Nightmare On Elm Street which is directed by Wes Craven.
The opening scene from the movie The Purge consists of a non linear sequence. This implies that it is not all in order like a story. it is all jumbled up of different times and locations. it is constantly CCTV footage of previous Purge nights, showing to the audience all of the graphic events that happen on the night of the Purge. The use of the non linear demonstrates what could be happening all at one time, portraying the brutality of the Purge.
The remake of a Nightmare On Elm Street also consists of a non linear sequence. It shows, mainly pictures of school children and school equipment or toys. Things like toy bricks on fire demonstrates Freddy's younger adult years of how he got locked up and burned alive. The school children could represent his previous victims, and as Freddy worked at a school, the sequence constantly shows scenes of a school and the children in it.
