When filming, we didn't need to use that many props; or murder weapon props. The whole point of our film, is that the killer eats his victims. Despite this we did use a variety of other props such as costumes and equipment that guards would use.
Jumpsuits
As the film is set in a mental asylum, we needed the inmates to look the part, we decided in the end we would would only use two jumpsuits, one orange and one green. The reasoning for this, was to identify the killer and the mental inmate to the audience, hence the two different colours. As well as this, the fact that the setting is a mental hospital and not a prison, meant that not all inmates would be wearing jumpsuits, just the dangerous ones; which identifies to the audience who the killer is. This means that when the colour green is seen, the audience knows that something bad is going to happen.
Hospital Gowns
As the setting for the film is a mental asylum, we needed something that the patients would wear. We ultimately decided on gowns, as it identified to the audience that these characters were not as dangerous as the killer. We needed the audience to understand this, as the character that Shawn played was a patient, but was a good guy, using different clothing made sure that the audience were not confused.
Warden's Gun
We felt as if we needed a gun for authenticity, despite going against conventions, as the victims never have guns; or working ones. This is why we had a scene in which the gun doesn't work, as it solves both problems, as in the audience doesn't question the fact that this secure place isn't guarded well, as well as not making it easy for the protagonist. We made sure to only include the gun in very few scenes, as we didn't want the audience think that the protagonist was safe.
Killer's Glasses
Our killer has a distinct pair of glasses. The design of the glasses are 'creepy' and is what weird people would wear in these types of films. We felt as if the killer needed something distinctive to him so he could be compared to other famous killers. We wanted something small, but something that stood out. We didn't want to use a weapon for this, as our killer doesn't use a weapon. Using a weapon as a distinctive part of the character could be seen as copying 'Freddy Kruger' from 'Nightmare on Elm Street. Our next idea was a muzzle, but then we thought it was be compared to 'Jason Vorhees'' Hockey Mask from 'Friday the Thirteenth.' The final distinctive prop we thought of was a tattoo ore scare, but ultimately thought that those items didn't 'fit' the profile of our killer. This is why the glasses were chosen, with out ultimate aim being audiences seeing a distinctive pair of glasses and thinking of our franchise, not too dissimilar to the glasses worn by Harry Potter, but with Harry Potter not being a horror, people won't make any comparison.
